We believe that it truly takes a village to raise a child. To that end, we are always looking for individuals to lend their assistance in a variety of forms.

Current volunteer opportunities include:

Director’s Council: Coney Island Prep’s Director’s Council is a group of individuals passionate about our mission and interested in assisting Coney Island Prep advance to the next level. Council members work to support our annual fundraising events as well as other special projects. By volunteering on our Director’s Council, you will guarantee that we raise the funds needed to continue to provide students with the highest quality college preparatory education.

Tutoring/Mentoring: Work with a student one-on-one to support academic and personal progress. Some students just need a confidant or positive role model; others just a need a little “boost” academically. Arrangements are flexible and can include support across subject areas or a specific content focus.

Field Trip Chaperone: At Coney Island Prep, we believe that field trips provide a valuable educational experience for students. Through our Saturday enrichment program, our scholars get to expand their worldview and engage in a variety of experiences throughout NYC and beyond. Examples of previous Saturday enrichment trips are: ice-skating in Bryant Park; brunch at The Farm on Adderley, after which scholars wrote restaurant reviews; a tour of Princeton University; a Circle Line boat cruise around lower Manhattan. The ideal chaperone will be able to strike the balance between providing a fun and enjoyable environment for the students, while maintaining a safe and structured environment.

Project-Based Learning Support/Evaluation – Science Fair & Exhibitions: Our students engage in a variety of interdisciplinary research and science projects throughout the year; it is invaluable for them to present their learning to real-world professionals. Traditionally, these projects have been concentrated in the spring. However, we are working to spread these learning opportunities throughout the school year, and we need support with project development, revision, and evaluation. Interested volunteers could work one-on-one with a scholar, or with a small group of scholars, to provide support as they develop their final project; or volunteers could serve as expert judges at the final project showcase.

“Proud Professionals” Career Day: Our aim is to expand our students’ horizons so that they are aware of the wide array of career paths that wait them upon graduating from college, and the requisite education involved in different career pursuits. Our career day includes a panel presentation about what you do or an informal “Q & A” over lunch with a small group of students. Perhaps a visit to your work place to see life and career skills in action could be arranged.

School Enrichment Programs: We are seeking enthusiastic individuals to propose and lead enrichment activities at Coney Island Prep. If you or someone you know has a special talent and would be willing to demonstrate, teach, or lead others in their expertise and passion, please let us know. This is a wonderful way to enrich your own life while enriching the lives of others.
